Walk of Fame

Known as the Walk of Fame, the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard is perhaps one of the most famous strips of public space. As symbols of popular cultural embedded within, the stars themselves differentiate this sidewalk from all others. Drawn by the allure of fame, the glamour of celebrity or merely as means of getting down the street, the Walk of Fame, is a place where people's lives intersect. As with any sidewalk, the Walk of Fame is a place where people with differing needs and values mingle and sometimes collide.

Begun in 1958, the Walk of Fame was developed as a tribute to those working within the entertainment industry. Honorees receive a star based upon career achievements as well as their charitable and civic contributions. Stars are awarded to the famous and the not so famous as well as those people who work behind-the-scenes. Currently over two thousand honorees have been awarded a star. New stars are added all the time, thereby ensuring The Walk’s continued presence as part of Hollywood streetscape and dreamscape.

Measuring three feet by three feet, each panel consists of a bronze star embedded within pink terrazzo and placed within a charcoal square of terrazzo. Within each star, in bronze, is the name of the recipient and one of five emblems signifying the category for which the person has been honored. The Walk of Fame runs north to south along Hollywood Boulevard from Gower to La Brea and east to west on Vine Street between Yucca and Sunset Boulevard.
